Did you know that for only one hour a month you can help fight illiteracy?  Have you always wanted to be involved with Rotaract’s international award winning signature service project—Ready 2 Read?  If the answers are yes, you need to be a Reading Buddy.

We are recruiting Reading Buddies for the upcoming school year.  Each Reading Buddy is asked to commit to reading to their assigned classroom one a month.  Reading Buddies are vital to the success of Ready 2 Read, and as our project, we need all our members to volunteer.

If you are interested in being a Reading Buddy, please sign up on the Rotaract website.  For more information please contact Richard Davis richard.davis@willis.com.

    • Better Basics

Want to help with the Ready 2 Read program but can’t commit to being a bi-monthly classroom volunteer? Better Basics needs help delivering all the libraries to 36 Birmingham City Schools.

We will be delivering the libraries between Sept. 7-10 and will meet at the Better Basics office at 9:00 a.m. each day.

If you can help for a couple of hours one day, please let Lauri Rogers know.  You may contact her at 944-2928 or volunteer@betterbasics.org.  Each classroom library consists of either five bags of books or three boxes, so it would be especially helpful if you have a truck or SUV.

Email Bains at bfleming@nwkt.com if you have questions.

Most of us take a warm, delicious meal every night for granted, but hunger is a reality for many living in central Alabama.  On September 13th and 14th, Rotaractors will have the opportunity to serve meals to more than 100 men needing assistance at the Jimmie Hale Mission.  Space is limited to six people each night, so please register online to reserve your spot.

We’re also calling all cooks to provide homemade sweet treats for the men at Jimmie Hale Mission.  If you are able, deliver at least a dozen cookies, brownies or your signature treat to the Rotary Past President's Room (Harbert Center, 2nd floor) on Monday, September 13th anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  We need 30 Rotaractors to contribute baked goods for the cause.

For more information, visit our website or contact Erin Stephenson at 327-3805 or estephenson@foundationbirmingham.org.
